In 2018, Amazon introduced “Just Walk Out” cashierless technology at a Seattle store. The system tracks the items customers bring and automatically charges for them. These involve human moderators who remotely review transactions and label images.

Just Walk Out was a pet project of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. Bezos wanted to differentiate the company in the supermarket market and eliminate queuing, which he considered the worst aspect of brick-and-mortar retail. In his 2018 shareholder letter, Bezos articulated the vision of a store where customers could walk in, grab what they needed and leave without delay.

The layoffs will impact some of the AWS identity and point of sale teams within the Physical Stores Technology organization, Dilip Kumar, vice president of AWS applications, wrote in a message to employees, according to a report from GeekWire.

The layoffs follow Amazon’s largest job cuts fourteen months earlier, which eliminated 18,000 company positions as part of a cost-cutting effort following a pandemic-driven workforce surge.

Amazon has stated that these decisions, while difficult, are necessary to optimize resources and continue to deliver innovation for their customers. The company has also committed to supporting affected employees as they transition to new roles within and outside Amazon.
